Cube World Alpha · Vanilla · 2013 build

The alpha world is online again.

Cube World Alpha deserves a server built to last. DarkCubes brings back the original 2013 PvE experience with vanilla terrain, loot, progression, no mods, and no shop. It runs on a revived and modernized version of cuwo, updated with bug fixes, security improvements, and new features for a more stable multiplayer experience.

The revival

A dead codebase, restarted

Cube World Alpha was abandoned, and cuwo, its open-source server implementation, eventually went quiet too. Its last update was released in 2018, leaving a valuable but outdated codebase that could no longer run reliably on modern systems.

cuwo remains unique because it emulates the terrain-generation behaviour of the original Server.exe. DarkCubes therefore gets the authentic Alpha world generation, with the same terrain and chunks produced by the original game.

Reviving cuwo in 2026 required modernizing the code, fixing crashes and security issues, and adding the features needed to operate a public server. AI was used extensively during development to analyse, repair, and improve the code, with the results tested on the live server.

Development Log2026
  1. PORT

    Modern platform support

Updated cuwo to run cleanly on current Python versions, compilers, and Linux systems.

  2. FIX

    Passive ability loop

Fixed the well-known bug that caused passive abilities to trigger repeatedly instead of applying once. Passive effects now behave correctly without generating unnecessary server load.

  3. PERF

    Entity distance handling

Reworked distance calculations to prevent incorrect entity updates and reduce CPU usage.

  4. PERF

    Broadcast efficiency

Removed redundant entity serialization and reduced the amount of repeated work performed each tick.

  5. FIX

    Configuration reloads

Corrected an issue that prevented updated script settings from being applied without restarting the server.

  6. SEC

    Security fixes

Several security issues in the original cuwo codebase were identified and fixed, making it safer and more reliable to run as a public server.

  7. NEW

    Live server status

Added a lightweight status API used by cubeworld-servers.com to display the current server status and player count.

On the server

What you get

No custom classes, paid ranks, or reworked progression. DarkCubes keeps the original Cube World Alpha experience at the heart of the server.

Pure vanilla

The original Alpha classes, skills, combat, loot, and progression. Nothing rebalanced, replaced, or hidden behind a shop.

The original world

World generation follows Picroma's original system. Biomes, villages, dungeons, and landscapes appear where the Alpha client expects them.

PvE first

Explore, complete quests, clear dungeons, and fight bosses together. PvP is disabled by default, so other players are allies rather than targets.

Vote rewards

Vote for DarkCubes on the server list to receive small in-game rewards. Rewards remain convenient and never provide combat power.

Stable and maintained

Built on a revived version of cuwo with bug fixes, security improvements, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance to keep the server running reliably.
